ConDFW Panels

February 1st, 2012 by Gabrielle Faust received No Comments »

The 2012 ConDFW fantasy & science fiction convention in Dallas, Texas is coming up in just a couple of weeks (February 17-19). Below is a list of the panels I will be speaking on during Friday and Saturday. I will also, most likely, be conducting a reading from my new dark fantasy novel REVENGE. For more information on ConDFW please visit www.condfw.org.

FRIDAY

Panel Room 2 – Manchester
5pm – Interstellar Archaeology: Initial Findings
Panelists: Mel White (M), Scott Padget, Ethan Nahte, Michael Ashleigh Finn, Gabrielle Faust, Teresa Patterson
The first of two panels where we inflict discover startling artifacts of OBVIOUS alien origin and our esteemed (and indeed, TRAINED) archeologists in turn tell us what the artifacts are. Light hearted fun, and bring ear plugs!

SATURDAY

Panel Room 3 – Canterbury
1pm – Horror without Focus: Writing the Apocalypse in Horror
Panelists: C. Dean Andersson, Larry Atchley Jr., Gabrielle Faust (M), K. Hutson, Dusty Rainbolt
It is moderately easy to create a horror story where you have an obvious villain. But in this year of disaster and apocalypse, we see the other side of Horror – where the villain is nature itself, whether by fire, flood or plague. Our panelists discuss the Apocalyptic Horror genre and its future in a time where the future is never certain.

Panel Room 1 – Warwick
3pm – Anatomy of a Red Shirt, or How to Kill Secondary Characters Realistically
Panelists: K.M. Tolan, Gabrielle Faust, David Gray (M), A.P. Stephens, Chris Fulbright
Okay, in the typical horror movie you see main (sort of) characters killed off one by one. However, the difference between a good horror movie and a bad one usually lies in whether the audience cares about the characters that are being killed off. Our panelists discuss how to create a believable “Red Shirt” without losing credibility, or someone’s lunch.

Panel Room 2 – Manchester
4pm – Horror vs. Urban Fantasy: Where is the Line?
Panelists: C. Dean Andersson, A. Lee Martinez (M), Larry Atchley Jr., Stina Leicht, Gabrielle Faust, Sue Sinor
Sometimes it is difficult to find what section a particular Urban Fantasy book belongs to. It is sometimes found in the Science Fiction/Fantasy section, but sometimes it is found in the Horror section. And to be honest, some Horror has been Urban Fantasy before the genre really came about, like Anne Rice’s vampire series. But what is the line between the darkness of Horror and the lightness of SF/Fantasy? Our panelists debate this dark topic and perhaps find out what Urban Fantasy really is.

“The Beat” by Gabrielle Faust

January 31st, 2012 by Gabrielle Faust received No Comments »

Today I unveiled an extremely experimental new short story on Lulu entitled “The Beat”. Set in the 1940′s, “The Beat” is the tale of a vampire and his obsession with a jazz singer. I have been obsessed with the literary stylings of Jack Kerouac ever since I read ON THE ROAD in the 6th grade. In this new short story I am attempting to embrace that reckless abandonment of structure that takes the story and delivers it more as a rushing river of poetry rather than a traditional piece of fiction. It is very different and I had an absolute blast crafting it. I hope you will enjoy it as well. At the moment it is available only in ebook format via Lulu , but will soon be available via iBook and the new Nook tablet as well. Please take a moment to visit the link below for more information.

January 27th, 2012 by Gabrielle Faust received No Comments »

It’s that time again, time for another shameless pandering for your votes in the 2012 Shorty Awards! The Shorty Awards honor the best of social media, recognizing the people and organizations producing real-time short form content across Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube, Foursquare, and the rest of the social Web. The public is invited to nominate social media users for excellence over the past year. Each award recognizes a content creator’s entire body of work, not just an individual tweet or post. Please consider casting your vote for me this year in the “Author” category via the link provided below. It would be an honor to have your support in this year’s awards. XOV””VOX

America: Where…well, a few dreams are possib...

"Culture" by AagaardDS

I’ve been pondering a few uncomfortable questions since watching President Obama’s third State of the Union speech last night on KLRU. I must admit that it was a stunningly crafted speech, thoroughly moving and exquisitely written. That said, there was one point that struck me in an off-key way. This was the topic of job creation in America. As an artist and author I have had my fair share of extreme struggles over the past couple of years since the epic tanking of the American economy. Watching my country dissolve beneath the weight of the most horrific economic collapse since the Great Depression was an experience which left millions of us traumatized and, still to this day, skittish and wary about any and all promises or declarations made by politicians. Many of my peers lost everything in the crash and are struggling to recover their livelihoods in a world where putting food on the table is still chosen over art. Am I to condemn anyone for that, of course not! If eating oil paints didn’t erode your brain and make you cut your ear off (thank you Van Gogh) there might be an exception. However, it leaves the artists, authors and musicians of the world in a precarious place where we find ourselves fighting harder than ever to preserve our positions as the pillars of culture in a society that is drowning with the daily fears of becoming homeless or worse. Our beloved President talked a good talk last night about job creation, about investing in programs to train able-bodied workers to fill positions and creating millions of jobs where none existed before. This sounds perfect in theory.

However, the jobs in question, the training in question that was described were, for example, engineering and auto mechanics. Technical trade and technological scientific careers that are about as far removed from something an artist such as I is trained to do as possible. It left me feeling a bit shut out in the cold, so to speak, and I found myself wondering if there will be a place for artists in this new world order in the future? Are we being completely eliminated? Where is the talk of investing in funding for the arts so that artists can pursue their careers against all odds? Or is our only hope of survival to be forced to put down our pens and paints and return to the hive where we will be fashioned into a worker for an assembly line somewhere? The idea of setting aside everything I have worked so very hard for my entire life to force myself to take up a trade or a career that I neither have any ability for, nor interest in because that is my only option in this country is heart-wrenching. Now, granted, I am allowing my imagination to envision a world 5 to 10 years down the road, and my imagination is rather vast. But it could very well happen.

I remember being in kindergarten and sitting at the feet of my teacher who asked each and every one of us “What do you want to be when you grow up?” It didn’t matter what we said whether it was “astronaut” or “unicorn”, our teacher said “Good! In this country you can do whatever your heart desires if you just work hard enough for it!” Now, I’m pretty sure the kid who said “unicorn” fell just short of that ambition, but the rest of us took that to heart. We believed that whatever dream we had could be realized if we committed to it and strove to grab hold of it. I know I did. I never for a moment believed that I could not overcome whatever obstacle I encountered because my passion for art and writing was so intense that I was going to make a career of it, just as had all of the artists and writers I idolized who came before me. I sit here now and wonder if teachers can look their children in the face today and say those same things? Can they honestly tell their kids that this is a country where anything is possible? Or is it now becoming the country where a few things are possible. Will teachers eventually hand their kids a short list of technical or scientific roles and ask the kids to select one instead of telling them to dream big and aim for the sky? What will this do to the revolutionary minds of the future? What will happen to the kid who wanted to be a unicorn?

I make light of this a little because it is a very serious question which I do not see many acknowledging or addressing. For me, there is no other path. I cannot do anything but be true to myself and remain the artist/author/musician that I am for to be anything else, to force myself to fit into any other box, would be a death sentence. It is all well and good that America’s leaders are doing what they perceive as “best” by investing in the barebones industries of this of the industrialized 1st world economy, but I beg them not to allow those well-meaning intentions to put out the lights of those pillars of culture: the arts. Civilization is defined by whether or not it has culture, the arts. While the world will always need auto mechanics and engineers, it also desperately needs artists for without culture, we are simply barbarians.

“The Beginning of Nights” on Lulu

January 24th, 2012 by Gabrielle Faust received No Comments »

Now, most of you have heard my rants about the self-publishing industry. Generally I feel that it is in an author’s best interest to at least attempt to find a publisher for one’s work at first, especially if you are just starting out in the publishing industry as it is the best way to ensure that bookstores will carry your work. That said, you will also be familiar with my rants on the publishing industry itself. It seems in this day and age, we as authors must take all aspects of both the industry and our projects into consideration before deciding what is best for that particular project. In the case of poetry, if you think getting a novel published is hard, don’t even think about a collection of poetry! It is near to impossible. Thus, I feel the self-publishing route is completely and entirely acceptable for collections of poetry as it means your work has a greater chance of reaching a possible audience. Plus, there is a strange sentimental quality to self-publishing poetry, taking me back to my time in college when I would type up pages, take them to the library to photocopy them and then spend an afternoon hand-binding them with original artwork to sell or trade at open mics at various local coffee shops. Granted, publishing through Lulu isn’t exactly the same sort of artistic tactile experience, but it is still a personal effort. Thus, I have decided to make my most recent collection of poetry “The Beginnings of Night” available as an ebook through Lulu. I was actually quite impressed with how easy their ebook publishing application was and do fully intend on utilizing it in the future for my slightly more oddball projects such as the bizarre beatnik vampire short story project I have been turning over like my precious for the past few weeks. I hope you will take a moment to download “The Beginning of Nights” which includes work from my previous collections “Crossroads” and “Before Icarus, After Achilles” along with nearly 65 new poems. Visit http://www.lulu.com/product/ebook/the-beginning-of-nights/18846155 to download the ebook for $1.99 and please help me to spread the word about this project. Your support is most deeply appreciated. XOV””VOX
