Beware: Bigfoot Ahead
The homegrown horror of The Wild Man of the Navidad
The Austin Chronicle | September 19, 2008
BY JOE O’CONNELL

The novice in search of enlightenment studies at the feet of the master. The wannabe horror filmmaker goes to Kim Henkel. That was exactly the path that led Austin’s Duane Graves and Justin Meeks to make The Wild Man of the Navidad, a Texas bigfoot tale that arrives in Austin for Fantastic Fest, perhaps its perfect venue. The two met up in a screenwriting class that Henkel, co-writer of the original The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, taught at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and he soon was their guru of gore. “We learned from him how to take criticism,” Meeks says. “We came to expect a lot of marks. He wasn’t into sugarcoating, which makes you perfect your script.” READ THE FULL ARTICLE ON THE AUSTIN CHRONICLE WEBSITE

The Wild Man of the Navidad screens as part of Fantastic Fest at the Alamo South Lamar on Sunday, Sept. 21, and Thursday, Sept. 25. Filmmakers Duane Graves and Justin Meeks will be in attendance, along with select cast members. For more info, visit www.fantasticfest.com and www.wildmanofthenavidad.com. The last Fantastic Fest screening of “The Wild Man of the Navidad” this Thursday, September 25, at 1:30 PM at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema on South Lamar here in Austin. The Bloodied Quill is a group newsletter and as such we need contributions from the group. We are looking for interviews, reviews (of books, movies, music, even video games), articles on writing, publishing, movie making, music and more, not to mention a piece or two of poetry or fiction. All contributions should be related to horror, dark fantasy or general dark genres. Please find the full submission guidelines below.

The deadline for September has been extended to September 20th. Anything received after that will be considered for the special Halloween issue, deadline October 10th.

IOHP Newsletter Guidelines (Updated 4-14-2008)
The Bloodied Quill is evolving. We are moving toward a more multi-media angle to reflect the variety of our membership.

The Bloodied Quill is a quarterly PDF publication for the members of the International Order of Horror Professionals, a group of professionals and fans from a wide variety of horror and dark-themed careers. From musicians to writers and movie makers, IOHP is a networking group for the genre, not just one part of it.

Articles/Columns
We are actively seeking articles and columns related to the horror genre in all its aspects. Articles on writing, movie making, music, web pages, publishing and even make up how tos are all welcome. If you are unsure feel free to send a short (200 words) pitch to test the waters.

News, Happenings and Member Success
Do you have a bit of news, a release announcement, or an event to tell us about? Send your news tips, release and events announcements in 50-100 words to thebloodiedquill@gmail.com.

Reviews
We are looking for reviews of books, movies (theater releases, DVDs and classics), music and horror or dark fantasy games. Reviews should be 200 to 500 words, should not be attacks on the authors, actors, musicians or directors and should contain more than “I liked/didn’t like this…”. We reserve the right to refuse reviews based on content, space restriction or if we have already accepted a review on said book or movie. Please use the following format and send your reviews in the body of the email to thebloodiedquill@gmail.com. Reviews are not the place for self promotion and reviews that reek of false positive, or false negative, will be refused.

Title:
Author or Director:
Publisher or Distributor:
Available: (New/Used/Theater Release/DVD)
Price:
Review:

Interviews
Please query all interviews.

Poetry and Fiction
Fiction should be under 5k and should be a reprint. We cannot pay at this time, so we refuse to take first rights to a story. The same goes for poetry, which should not be of an epic length. Fiction and poetry should be horror or dark fantasy themed. While we understand that violence and gore are part of horror we will refuse stories that are nothing but violence and gore. Likewise we will decline stories that are nothing but hate, prejudice or sexism and we have no desire to read about molestation. Creative works should also be error free and show an understanding of grammar, plotting and story structure.

Please send poetry and fiction to thebloodiedquill@gmail.com in the body of the email. Attachments will be deleted unread.

Comments, questions and feedback are all welcome via email at thebloodiedquill@gmail.com

As part of a rather clever marketing campaign for the upcoming Hellboy II movie premier, Hellboy has been appearing in a variety of ads and interviews on the SciFi Channel, including a mock interview with James Lipton. Here are a couple of clips from the interview. Enjoy! ;)

No more vampires. No more witches. No more Talamasca. One has to respect her conviction, however, to her new beliefs.

Friday’s Mean Good News!

Author: Gabrielle Faust
09.05.2008

Well, this week has wrapped up in an excellent way! Earlier today I dropped by Dragon’s Lair Comics, one of the most well-known comics shops in Austin and my personal haunt for, oh, the past 18 years, and met with the manager about a possible Eternal Vigilance signing in June. He was very enthusiastic about the idea and is interested in setting me up, possibly, on June 21st (mark your calendars!!). I hopefully will have a confirmation of that next week *crosses fingers*. I left a couple of copies with the staff to review for their website and left the store with a rush of adrenaline. Not only am I truly loyal to the store having pretty much grown up, and spent half of my lifetime income, there, but I was overjoyed at the pure and honest pride they take in promoting independent artists such as myself. If you’re ever in Austin please check out the store!

I also noticed that the final version of the cover of the June edition of Doorways Magazine was posted the other day on editor Brian Yount’s MySpace blog, the one with the background design (text was done by Brian) by yours truly, as well as an article I wrote about the Servant Girl Annihilator! This issue is devoted to the most devoutly worshiped Mr. Clive Barker and will feature a reprint of his story Midnight Meat Train! New artwork from a variety of artists will also accompany the story which was originally published in Volume One of The Books Of Blood. A teaser of this work has been posted over on Clive Barker’s website! Be sure to pick up a copy when it hits bookstores and newstands next month! It will also be available for purchase through the Doorways Magazine website (http://www.doorwayspublications.com/).

Also, be sure to visit the NexGen Pulp Magazine website and pick up the June/July issue (out next) month if you’re interested in reading a special interview with, you named it, ME (because it’s all about me, don’t you know ;)…)! This is a crazy cool new independent pulp magazine that just got started this past year. And currently they are running a $2 Special on all past issues! Support independent arts!

Other good news… The word count on the second installment of Eternal Vigilance reached 80,000 words this week! Very close, very close! Of course the second novel is going to be quite a bit longer than the first, but I still feel confident that the first draft of the manuscript will be done by the end of the summer! Gods willing and java bean providing, of course.

Well, I suppose that’s about it for now. Not a bad way to wind up the week, if you ask me! :)

Bites & Kisses,

Gabrielle
