Passing on ‘The Spirit’
December 30th, 2008 by Gabrielle Faust received No Comments »I have chosen to pass on seeing THE SPIRIT. From what I have seen in the previews and online, I cannot see one original idea, concept or even dialogue line in the entire film. It’s bland, boring, an idea that has been overcooked to the point where it has become dry and disappointing in its delivery. Frank Miller seems to be simply continuing to capitalize on his original ground-breaking cinematic presentation in SIN CITY. Does Miller have no new ideas for ways to bring a scrip to life on the silver screen? I’m disappointed in him as, for several years, I saw him as one of the new great innovators in film. He tested the boundaries of what could be done with CGI and other artistic effects to add a comic-book essence to his creations, a trait I thoroughly enjoyed being a comic book geek myself. However, THE SPIRIT only shows that either Miller has become incredibly lazy with his filmmaking or so arrogant that he believes there are no new ideas, at least for him. Hopefully, Miller will prove us wrong with whatever next project he presents to the world. For the time being, however, I will save my eight dollars and sit this one out. I think it would be far too painful for me to sit through.
