It was confirmed this afternoon that Richard Matheson, the literary genius that gave us I AM LEGEND and THE OMEGA MAN has passed away at age 86. News of the legend’s departure from this earthly world was discovered when his daughter released a statement via Facebook:
“My beloved father passed away yesterday at home surrounded by the people and things he loved…he was funny, brilliant, loving, generous, kind, creative, and the most wonderful father ever…I miss you and love you forever Pop and I know you are now happy and healthy in a beautiful place full of love and joy you always knew was there…”
Matheson was awarded the “Vampire Novel of the Century” by the Horror Writers’ Association in 2012 at the World Horror Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah for his novel I AM LEGEND. His touching acceptance speech, delivered via a recording due to his failing health, was recorded by Scott Edleman of Blastr.com (see below).
Richard Matheson will be missed greatly by the world and remembered always. Rest in peace.
