Farewell Alexander McQueen

February 11th, 2010 by Gabrielle Faust received 1 Comment »

The tragic news of the death of Alexander McQueen has rocked the fashion world to its very core this morning. According to the UK online magazine the Mirror, McQueen was found in his London home by police after apparently committing suicide. A spokeswoman for the legendary designer said to press “We’re devastated and I hope you understand that out of respect to his family and his colleagues we’re not going to be making any further statement.” Out of respect, his company has temporarily taken his website offline during this time of mourning.

Another spokeswoman for McQueen’s company also released the statement:

“On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand, has been found dead at his home…At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family. Lee’s family has asked for privacy in order to come to terms with this terrible news and we hope the media will respect this.”

According to the Mirror McQueen had been severely depressed as of late after the passing of his mother. His unfortunate passing comes only one week before the start of London Fashion Week. This tragedy will no doubt make this year’s events mournful as designers and patrons pay tribute to the high-goth fashion icon. McQueen’s work was unmistakably brilliant; one part cutting-edge design, one part pure dark dreamworld beauty. He was a visionary that knew no bounds and an artist that was revered by millions around the world. His mark upon the fashion industry will be everlasting.

This is indeed a very sad day…
