Anne Rice clarifies statement made to Time magazine
March 1st, 2008 by Gabrielle Faust received 10 Comments »Anne Rice has posted a clarification of the statement Time Magazine published a little while ago about the possibility of her writing another Vampire Chronicles novel. She affirms, much to my disappointment, that, if she is to write another vampire novel, it will be a Christian-centric book focused around the “word of the lord”. Here is an excerpt…
“Well, guys, a casual remark I made in an interview with TIME.com a few days ago has brought more reaction than I ever dreamed it would and so it seems I must clarify what I said. Yes, I am contemplating one last novel involving the Vampire Lestat, and the Talamasca, the fictional organization I created years ago in the Vampire novels. The novel, if ever written, would be entirely Christian in framework and would involve Redemption. It would affirm my dedication to Christ and my belief in Him and my commitment to write only for Him.
Such a novel would probably not appeal to the old Goth readers who want to see the vampires continue in their old ways. But it might very much appeal to readers of the old books who saw them as spiritual works about the search for salvation. They might welcome it as a Christian conclusion to the saga I abandoned in 2002. In fact, emails have been flowing in for the last few days expressing great enthusiasm for a Christian novel with the vampire Lestat…“

Thank you for taking the time and space to give me this break: One of the frustrations for any novelist is: we work like crazy on our complex books, and then the sound bites and brief quips push us and our work back into the shadows. Again, I’m grateful to you. More and more I use my website to clarify things, and judging from the flow of emails, it’s been very rewarding. You were kind to do this. And let me say again, emails are flowing in for this Christian conclusion to Lestat’s long saga. I’m a little amazed. And I’m leaning more and more towards doing it. —- I found what Lestat was looking for. The light of Redemption. There is an aesthetic and moral continuity to revealing Lestat’s discovery of the same light of Christ. I hinted at it in the last vampire novels, but never resolved the immense issue. Maybe now is the time. As we Christians say, I’ll pray on it. Anne Rice, Rancho Mirage, California — on a sunny Sunday out here in the desert.
Cool.. it’s always a delight to see when blogging allows us such positive, informative interactions. I have not been following the vampire books but this one sounds interesting – redemption is ALWAYS interesting since a part of us, on the surface or not, is always craving it.
From craving blood to craving redemption… neat!
Best to you all,
Sam
