Stephen King to the rescue…

SciFi Wire ran an interesting story this morning about King’s donation to Maine Army National Guard currently training at Camp Atterbury so that the men and women could return home for the holidays. King and his wife Tabitha donated $12,999 (a drop in the bucket really for the legend), which was topped off with a dollar from his staff member Julie Eugley, to make an even thirteen grand. In light of the current economic struggle, the funds will allow 150 members of the Brewer-based Bravo Company of the 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry Unit to return to their families in Maine. Considering that these Guardsmen are to be shipped off to Afghanistan in January, this gift could not have come at a more opportune time.
According to the Look to the Stars site, which tracks which charities members of Hollywood are involved in, King has been involved in a variety of charities over the years including ones focused on AIDS, Animals, Cancer, Children, Hunger and Poverty. Two of the primary charities he is listed as supporting are the Heifer International, which works to promote strong communities, sustainability, environmental protection and peace by providing livestock and training in order to alleviate hunger and poverty and encourage self-reliance, and the Jimmy Fund, which supports the fight against cancer at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, helping to raise the chances of survival for children and adults with cancer around the world.
