This afternoon I was watching an episode of Gene Simmons Family Jewels and happened to notice a brief mention of a new comic book, entitled Incarnate, being released by Nick Simmons, Gene Simmons’ son. Instantly intrigued I checked out the website. Nick Simmons has this to say on the about his debut series:
“With Incarnate, besides the obvious cool-factor and the crazy, bloodslinging action, I’ve tried to create a world in which values are reversed. You will find yourself rooting for very flawed, ruthless, and amoral protagonists, most of which have long lost their humanity. In fact, to some, humankind as a whole becomes the antagonist. This is not a story about the inner beauty of humanity, nor is it about the power of love; this a story in which you will, against all your better logic, identify with monsters.”
Also on the site was the following official press release statement:
COMING AUGUST 2009 – From Nick Simmons, son of rock legend Gene Simmons and star of A&E’s GENE SIMMONS FAMILY JEWELS, comes a revolutionary new take on the undead. They cannot die. They feel no pain. They hunger for human flesh. They are Revenants. Centuries ago, the Revenant known as Mot was worshipped as a God. Now, he walks the Earth in search of a purpose to his immortality – but when a secret society discovers a way to kill Revenants, Mot and his fellow immortals must make a choice: Hunt or be hunted. Nick Simmons’ breakout American Manga title reveals a world that challenges even the imagination, planting its tongue firmly in cheek, then biting it off…And swallowing it.
Creator and Writer – NICK SIMMONS
Penciler – NICK SIMMONS
Inker – MATT DALTON
Colorist – BRIAN BUCCELLATO
Assistant artists – NAM KIM, BEN HARVEY & SHI HUA WANG of STUDIO IL

I have to say that I am definitely going to be checking out Incarnate! The first issue is currently available for pre-order on the A&E | Shop website for $4.99, along with a T-shirt design inspired by Nick Simmons’ work.

Apart from Simmons, who else do you like? Were you ever an Elf Quest fan? Plenty of dragons to see there. Nick Simmons work reminds me alot of Tim Sale. Neal Adams is a sentimental choice, but my favorite contemporary comic artist is Alex Ross; his realism is remarkable!

Well, I’ve yet to read Nick Simmons’ work so I can’t really say I’m a “fan” yet. But I have high hopes. Yes, Elfquest was a huge influence on me when I was young. I remember the first time I was given one of the graphic novels in 3rd grade by a friend. I think that’s the precise time I fell in love with comic books. I went through my X-Men craze and DC devotion in the 1990’s. Now, I tend towards the more indie comics. Dawn, Strangers In Paradise, Lenore, Kabuki, Crimson…are a few of the titles I am subscribed to at my local comic shop, Dragon’s Lair. I look for truly original stuff now and the artwork is really what draws me in initially since, we must admit, is meant to be a largely visual media. If the artwork is typical or bad, I simply can’t embrace it….

I liked the first sampling. Are we going to see any more pages from your work on the EV comic soon?

Ah, I hope so! Just looking for the right funding to get the project back on track!

Kewl! Can’t wait!
Remember when the members of KISS claimed that they mixed their own blood into the ink of their comic? That would make a great promo for the future EV release!

I love the show…and most of all nick! so when i saw him promoting his Amanga i got excited after seeing the cover (its good)…the looked at the preview pages on his site, i got a O_O reaction that it really is similar to Kouta Hirano’s Hellsing manga, the character style and the S.W.A.T.!!! but has a more refined drawing compared to Hellsing…im not saying Nick’s work is bad or copied! but i really do like it and look forward to read it and how it goes.

I absolutely adore Nick and am thrilled to see his work in print! It may be similar to Kouta Hirano’s work but, then again, this is his first comic book and he’s young so his style will continue to evolve over the years.
