Doug woke the next morning feeling anything but lucky. Frank had gone to work, leaving him alone with his conscience, and he felt the quiet settle over him like a suffocating hood.
His inability to mourn, or even remember, Trisha Warner added a new layer to his sense of desolation. Certainly she’d meant something to him, even if merely a respite from married life, but she, like so many memories, now resided in a dark, lifeless cave.
He showered, looked at his frightening reflection in the mirror for only a few seconds and then called a taxi before dressing.
